Scoliosis

       Scoliosis or side curvature of spine, frequent disease of children and teenagers - from 1,7 % up to 17 % of children, and, much more frequent in girls (10:1).

       The curvatures of spine and thorax with a hump formation were well known for a long time. People have been trying to treat scoliosis from old times. However, the real success in scoliosis treatment was achieved not long ago.

       To centuries-old experience has proved that progressive scoliosis cannot be cured by conservative methods. In this case, only surgery can help.

       There are many techniques of operative treatment. Different medical centers use various techniques. The problem for outsiders is to select a method of operative treatment. All modern techniques use various titanic structures. Used earlier traumatic operations including a resection or transaction of ribs, removal of a part of spine etc., passed into history. In our clinic, we use a Russian structure for scoliosis treatment, created by orthopedists from Krasnoyarsk. This modern structure has high reliability, effectiveness, simplicity of installation and fixing. Small weight - no more than 300 grams. The structure can extend independently according to the process of growth of the child. It has won many gold medals for "treatment of scoliosis" and many prizes in Russia and abroad.

       Orthopedists form Krasnoyarsk led by professor V.N. Shubkin were generally recognized as the best "For creation of the new method of treatment". It was noted, that this technique is unique and it helps to correct severe scoliosis conditions in children during growth. All other available, including foreign, structures are focused on treatment of scoliosis only after the child has stop growing.


Treatment

The description of the technique

       The basic part of the technique is the principle of a gradual stretching of tissues (distraction), using a spine as a point of support. The titanic structure consisting of fixing blocks and elastic plates is fixed to the posterior part of spine, most string its part. These plates are the main element of the structure and carry the basic load, supporting a growing spine of a child in a direct position. During operation using the special device, a surgeon straightens a spine. The major advantage of the structure is its mobility along a vertical axis and automatic elongation during the child growth. The structure is very light in weight - no more than 300 grams, it is imperceptible and practically do not limit the mobility of the spine. Use of its structure excludes an injury to the vertebras. After the operation, there is no need in external plaster fixation, corsets and other devices.

       The postoperative period takes 10 days, and then a patient is discharged to outpatient treatment. Usually by this time, the patients walk without assistance and supply themselves. Rehabilitation proceeds 4-5 more weeks. The child can go to usual school and have normal way of life.

Advantages of the technique

  1. The opportunity to start the operative treatment at early stages of scoliosis, not waiting for irreversible changes in spine and thorax. The structure (two-plate endocorrector) is movable in a vertical plane and grows together with a child. The least age of the child, who had surgery according to this technique was 8 years. There are no other structures having such opportunities.
  2. High efficiency. The straightening of spine is made during operation in 20 minutes by the special device, which helps to straighten a spine gradually and safely. The prompt surgery (in the age of 10-12 helps) guarantee the normal development of the child. He does not need any additional operations.
  3. Atraumatic. The operation does not require any traumatization of the skeleton - transaction of bones, removal of disks, rough intervention in anatomic formations. The sparing mode of operation allows to reduce loss of blood to small volumes - 400-500 ml. After removal of the structure in 7-8 years, a spine will keep all functionalities.
  4. Fast rehabilitation. Patients start to sit in a bed in a day after the operation, to stand. - in 2-3 day, to walk - in 3-4 days. In 1-1.5 months the children can visit usual lessons at school. Full restoration of exercise performance take place in 2-3 months.
  5. The neurological complications are actually does not happen. At our patients, we did not have any neurologic complications.
